Juttis

Juttis, also known as Punjabi juttis, are traditional handcrafted footwear from the Indian subcontinent, especially the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. They are slip-on, closed-toe shoes with a leather or suede sole and a richly decorated upper, designed to be worn with regional dress such as salwar kameez, sherwanis, or sarees.

Juttis are commonly made by hand with a leather or suede sole attached to a fabric or leather upper. The uppers are often stitched rather than glued, and are elaborately embellished with embroidery, beading, mirrors, sequins, zari, gota, or naqashi. Toe shapes vary from pointed to almond to rounded.

Regional variations include Punjab-style juttis with heavy embroidery, and the closely related mojari from the Mughal period with a more curved, tapering toe. In Rajasthan and Gujarat, juttis may feature bold gota work or mirrorwork. Craft centers include Amritsar, Ludhiana, Multan, and Srinagar.

Historically associated with traditional dress, juttis are worn by both men and women for daily use and special occasions, especially weddings and festivals. They have cultural significance in Punjabi folk culture and in bridal attire.

Today, juttis appear in fashion beyond traditional wear, produced in leather or synthetic materials, with a variety of colours and decorations, including contemporary flat or platform designs, and are sold worldwide.
