Aviaries

An aviary is a large enclosure for keeping birds, allowing them to fly within a controlled area. Unlike small cages, aviaries provide substantial free flight and social interaction. They are found in zoos, bird parks, wildlife sanctuaries, botanical gardens, and private homes.

Aviaries are typically constructed with a frame of wood or metal and covered with wire mesh or netting. They can be outdoor or indoor, and may be standalone or integrated into a larger enclosure. Design emphasizes space, naturalistic landscaping with trees, shrubs, and water features, perches, feeders, nest boxes, and sheltered corners. Safety features include secure doors, weatherproofing, and predator protection. Regular maintenance includes cleaning, waste removal, pest control, and ensuring good ventilation and temperature and humidity.

Animal welfare considerations: stocking levels, species compatibility, enrichment to encourage natural behaviors such as foraging and flight, appropriate diets, and veterinary care. Quarantine and biosecurity measures to prevent disease spread, especially when housing diverse species. For tropical species, climate control may be necessary; temperate species require wind and rain protection.

Uses and diversity: Large public aviaries aim to provide educational displays and breeding opportunities, while private aviaries are kept by hobbyists or breeders to house pet birds or for conservation programs. Some aviaries mimic forest canopies with layered vegetation; others are open-topped for flight outdoors. Ethical standards and welfare guidelines influence construction and management.
