Shiba, commonly called the Shiba Inu, is a small-to-medium dog breed that originated in Japan. It was developed as a hunting dog for mountainous terrain and dense brush, used to track small game such as birds and hares. The breed is one of the oldest native Japanese dog breeds and remains popular as a companion and watchdog.

Appearance: The Shiba Inu is typically 13.5 to 16.5 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs about 17 to 23 pounds, with males slightly larger than females. It has a compact, agile build, a curled tail, and a fox-like face with erect ears. The coat is double-layered and weather-resistant. Colors recognized include red, sesame (red with black-tipped hairs), black and tan, and solid black; cream is generally not accepted by major registries.

Temperament: Shibas are alert, confident, and independent. They are loyal to their families but can be reserved with strangers and strong-willed. They have a notable prey drive and thrive with early socialization, consistent training, and plenty of mental and physical activity. Positive reinforcement methods are typically recommended.

Care and health: Shibas usually live about 12 to 15 years. They are generally healthy but can be prone to patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, certain eye disorders, and allergies. They shed heavily, especially during seasonal periods, and require regular brushing and routine veterinary care. Exercise needs are moderate to high.

Etymology and notes: The name Shiba is linked to the breed’s origin in rural Japan, with “shiba” referring to brushwood in Japanese. The breed is recognized by major kennel clubs, including the American Kennel Club, and remains a common symbol of Japanese dog heritage.
