Gravören is the Swedish term for an engraver, a craftsman who incises a design into a hard surface, most often metal. Engravers work on a range of objects, including coins, medals, jewelry, seals, and decorative surfaces, and they may also contribute to printmaking and architectural ornament. The profession encompasses traditional hand engraving as well as modern machine-assisted and digital methods.

Historically, engraving has deep roots in metalworking and printmaking. In Europe from the Renaissance onward, engraved copper plates were used for intaglio prints, while master engravers prepared dies and inscriptions for coinage and medals. Over time, the discipline split into specialties such as coin, medal, jewelry, and instrument- or seal-engraving. In Swedish usage, gravören can denote a person employed by a mint, a jewelry house, or a print studio.

Techniques and tools: Traditional hand engraving uses a burin (graver) to cut lines into metal. The tool shapes determine line quality, and finishing involves filing, polishing, and patination. In addition to hand engraving, modern practice includes machine engraving, laser engraving, and CAD/CAM-based design for reproducible patterns.

Training and work life: Entry commonly occurs through apprenticeship or formal training in silversmithing, goldsmithing, or metalwork. Engravers work in workshops, mints, jewelry studios, and print houses. The job demands precision, steady hand control, good visual-spatial ability, and knowledge of materials, typography, and corrosion resistance.

Contemporary gravörer may specialize in a single material or technique and often combine traditional methods with digital design tools. The field remains active in jewelry manufacture, metal art, and currency production, with both craft and industry contexts preserving historical techniques alongside new technologies.
