Printmaking is the art of creating images by transferring ink from a prepared matrix onto paper or other substrates. Prints are typically produced in multiple impressions, allowing editions, proofs, and variations. The matrix may be carved, drawn, etched, or assembled and can be made from wood, metal, stone, or synthetic materials.

The main techniques fall into several categories. Relief printing, including woodcut and linocut, uses raised surfaces that hold ink; the image is created by removing material from the matrix. Intaglio encompasses engraving, etching, aquatint, and mezzotint, where ink is held in recessed lines or grooves. Planographic printing, such as lithography, works on a flat surface where ink adheres to image areas and is repelled by non-image areas. Screen printing, or serigraphy, pushes ink through a mesh screen with a stencil blocking ink in non-image areas. Monotype and monoprint produce a small number of unique impressions from a non-reusable matrix. Other methods include collagraph, which builds up a textured surface, and newer photopolymer or digital-to-analog approaches that translate images to matrices.

Historically, printmaking originated in East Asia, with woodblock printing in China and Japan, and spread to Europe where relief and metal engraving supported illustration and fine art from the Renaissance onward. Notable practitioners include Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Francisco Goya, Hokusai, and in the 20th century, artists such as Picasso, Warhol, and Johns who expanded the medium’s possibilities.

In practice, true prints require careful editioning, with signed and numbered impressions to certify authenticity. Printmaking remains central to fine art, graphic design, and education, valued for its reproducibility, material diversity, and expressive potential.
