An edition is a version of a written work released at a particular time, often by a publisher, that may differ from earlier versions. Editions are used in bibliographies and catalogs to distinguish copies that reflect editorial decisions, corrections, or additions. An edition is not simply a new printing; it denotes substantive changes or curatorial choices that distinguish it from prior releases.

Common types include the first edition, which is the initial published version; revised editions, which incorporate corrections or updates; expanded editions, which add new material; annotated editions, which provide scholarly notes; and facsimile editions, which reproduce the original text and formatting. Digital editions—e-books and online versions—are increasingly common and can be updated without printing new copies.

In cataloging, editions are identified by edition statements (for example, "third edition") and may include information about editors, translations, or print runs. A printing is a subset of an edition, often with minor changes to typography or pagination, while substantive changes usually constitute a new edition.

Editioning has practical and cultural implications. It affects copyright status, licensing, and market strategy, as publishers price and distribute by edition. Collectors seek early or limited editions. Scholarly editions aim to present a text with critical apparatus, establishing a standard. Overall, editions document how a text has been interpreted and transmitted over time.
