Editioning
Editioning refers to the practice of creating and managing distinct releases or versions of a work. An edition comprises all copies produced from a particular state of a document or artifact, with differences from earlier or later states noted as revisions, variants, or printings. Key concepts include edition, printing (or impression), state, and variant. Editions may change content (revisions, additions) or forego changes and simply reprint the same text; editions also differ in typography, pagination, and binding. Editioning records are used in catalogs to indicate the exact version being cited.
In book publishing, editioning marks the evolution of a work through time: first editions, revised or "new"
In visual arts and printmaking, editioning entails producing a limited number of copies, each bearing an edition
In digital and multimedia contexts, editioning can refer to versioning and release cycles, with edition statements
