Gold is typically used in alloys to improve hardness and color, with common finenesses such as 14 karat and 18 karat. Other metals, including silver, copper, and palladium, are used to create white, yellow, or rose gold. Techniques include lost-wax casting, fabrication by hand, raising and repoussé work, chasing, filigree, granulation, engraving, and enameling. Stone-setting methods include bezel, prong, and channel settings. Finishing involves filing, sanding, polishing, and sometimes plating or rhodium coating. Hallmarking in many jurisdictions certifies metal content.

Today, goldsmithing encompasses fine jewelry, bespoke commissions, and decorative arts. Ethical considerations drive sourcing of gold through fair-trade and conflict-free supply chains, along with sustainable workshop practices. Education, professional associations, and conservation efforts help preserve traditional techniques while integrating digital design and modern safety standards.
