Mechanization is the use of machines to perform tasks that were previously done manually or by animals, often powered by water, steam, electricity, or internal combustion engines. It aims to increase productivity, consistency, and speed while reducing labor and physical strain. Mechanization covers many sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, construction, and transportation.

The roots of mechanization lie in early mechanical devices and the industrial use of water and wind power. The Industrial Revolution introduced centralized power sources, steam engines, and machine tools that could reproduce parts and perform work more efficiently. Electrification and later internal combustion engines broadened the reach and reliability of machinery.

In agriculture, mechanization transformed farming practices with seed drills, threshers, and reapers, followed by tractors, combines, and irrigation systems. These advances allowed larger-scale production, reduced seasonal labor demands, and altered rural economies and migration patterns.

In manufacturing, machine tools, power looms, and milling machines enabled standardization and mass production. Assembly lines and later CNC machines and robotics further increased output and accuracy, while introducing new skill requirements and concerns about job displacement and maintenance.

In the contemporary era, mechanization increasingly blends with automation and robotics, including computer-controlled equipment, autonomous machines, and automated logistics. Alongside productivity gains, concerns about safety, environmental impact, and labor transitions persist. Mechanization remains a foundational concept for modern industry and agriculture, evolving as technologies advance.
