Projektingenieur is a German term for a project engineer who plans, coordinates and controls engineering projects. The core responsibilities include defining project objectives, preparing schedules and budgets, coordinating interdisciplinary teams, and ensuring compliance with technical standards and regulations. A Projektingenieur handles procurement, supplier interfaces, risk management, and quality assurance, as well as documenting progress and reporting to stakeholders. The position often involves technical problem solving, performance monitoring of equipment and processes, and ensuring safe and environmentally compliant operations.

Qualifications typically require a university degree in an engineering discipline (such as mechanical, electrical, civil, or chemical engineering) and relevant experience in project work. Proficiency in project management methods and tools (for example scheduling software, cost control, and versioned documentation) is common. Strong communication, coordination, and leadership skills are essential, as the role involves collaboration with clients, suppliers and internal departments.

In relation to other roles, the Projektingenieur is usually more technically focused than the overall project manager (Projektleiter). The engineer may manage specific work packages and support the project manager, potentially progressing to broader management responsibilities or specialized technical leadership.

Geographically, the term is used in German-speaking countries, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Career paths often lead from design or field engineers to Projektingenieur and, later, to project management or senior engineering positions.
