position

Position is the state of being located or arranged in relation to a reference frame or other objects. It can refer to physical location, a stance or posture, or a role within an organization. The term is widely used across disciplines and everyday language to denote location, order, or function.

In geography and navigation, position specifies where an object is on the surface or in space, often given by coordinates such as latitude, longitude, and altitude. Position is relative to a chosen frame of reference; absolute and relative positions are used in mapping, surveying, and GPS systems.

In mathematics and physics, position denotes a point in space. A position vector describes location from an origin; in kinematics, the position of a particle is a function of time. Angular position and orientation (pose) are used in robotics and computer graphics.

In employment and organization, a position is a job or function a person holds. It has duties, responsibilities, a title, and a reporting line. Positions can be full-time or part-time, permanent or temporary, and may be subject to performance criteria or promotion ladders.

Other uses include sports and games, where players occupy positions with distinct roles; linguistics, where position refers to the order of elements in a sentence; and marketing, where positioning describes how a product is perceived relative to competitors.
