Positioning is the process by which an organization seeks to place its product, service, or brand in a distinct and favorable position in the minds of a target audience relative to competing offerings. It focuses on the perception of value rather than solely on features. Core elements include the target market, frame of reference (the category in which the product competes), the point of difference (the attributes that set the offering apart), and the point of parity (attributes it shares with competitors). A concise positioning statement articulates these elements, typically structured as: for [target], [brand] is the [frame of reference] that [benefit] because [reason to believe], unlike [key competitors].

Positioning draws on market research, perceptual mapping, and competitive analysis to identify gaps or niches. The process usually involves defining the desired image, testing messages with consumers, and aligning the marketing mix (product, price, place, promotion) to reinforce the intended perception. Distinctions are made between product positioning (how a product is positioned within a category), brand positioning (the overall image of the brand), and corporate or store positioning (the organization’s broader market stance).

Historically, the concept was popularized in the late 20th century by marketing thinkers such as Ries and Trout. In practice, successful positioning requires consistency over time and authenticity in the customer experience.
