Defining is the act of specifying the meaning of a term or concept by articulating its essential properties and boundaries. A clear definition helps reduce ambiguity, supports classification, and enables reasoned argument by making what is being talked about explicit. Definitions are central to disciplines ranging from everyday language to science, mathematics, and philosophy.

The term derives from Latin definire, meaning to set boundaries or determine content. In ordinary use, a definition attempts to capture what a term signifies and to distinguish it from related terms.

Definitions come in several forms. Lexical definitions describe how a word is used in a language, aiming to reflect common usage. Stipulative definitions assign a meaning for a term within a particular context, regardless of prior usage. Ostensive definitions define by pointing to examples or instances. Operational definitions specify how a concept will be measured or observed, tying meaning to observable procedures. Theoretical definitions try to summarize the essential nature of a concept by stating necessary and sufficient conditions. A traditional technique is the genus and differentia method: name a broader category (genus) and specify distinguishing features (differentia) that separate the term from other members of the same genus.

Effective definitions are non-circular, precise, and parsimonious, and they should be testable or usable in argument. They play a crucial role in knowledge organization, communication, and logical reasoning, shaping how disciplines classify, compare, and explain phenomena.
