History and variants: early macro utilities paved the way for dedicated macro keys, which became common on gaming keyboards in the 2000s. Modern keyboards offer hardware- or software-based macro storage, on-screen macro panels, or scriptable interfaces, accommodating a range of user needs and preferences.
