Computeraided refers to the use of computer systems to assist design, analysis, and manufacturing tasks that traditionally required manual methods. The term covers computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and computer-aided engineering (CAE), as well as related disciplines such as computer-aided architectural design and computer-aided testing.

CAD originated in the 1960s with interactive graphics and became widespread in the 1980s. It enables the creation, visualization, and modification of precise 2D drawings and 3D models. CAE encompasses simulation and analysis tools, including finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and multibody dynamics. CAM plans and controls manufacturing processes, including computer numerical control (CNC) programming and robotic tooling. Modern workflows often integrate CAD, CAM, and CAE into CAD/CAM/CAE environments and digital twins.

Key components include specialized software, compatible hardware, and data standards. Interoperability is supported by formats such as DXF/DWG (2D), IGES and STEP (3D), and BIM data for construction. Effective use relies on data management, version control, and coordination across disciplines and suppliers.

Applications span architecture, automotive, aerospace, electronics, consumer products, machinery, and construction. In engineering and design, computer-aided methods reduce iteration time, improve accuracy, and enable optimization and generative design. In manufacturing, CAM drives automated tooling and additive manufacturing workflows.

Benefits include enhanced efficiency, improved performance prediction, and virtual testing before production. Challenges include high initial cost, the need for specialized training, data interoperability, and cybersecurity. Ongoing developments emphasize cloud-based tools, collaboration, higher fidelity simulations, and integration with digital twin ecosystems.
