Design principles emphasize accessibility, hygiene, and operational efficiency. Durable, non-porous materials with antimicrobial finishes are common, along with slip-resistant flooring and robust privacy doors. Fixtures are often high-efficiency and touchless, including sensor-activated faucets, automatic soap dispensers, and air-dry or energy-efficient hand dryers. Lighting is selected for visibility and energy use, with controls that adapt to occupancy.

Accessibility and inclusivity are central, with at least one accessible stall, generous door widths, grab bars, and clear signage. Layouts aim to minimize cross-traffic between users and provide private changing or nursing areas where appropriate.
