Presents, or gifts, are objects, experiences, or services given from one person or group to another without the expectation of payment. They are used to convey affection, gratitude, celebration, or social obligation. While gifts can influence behavior, they are distinguished from loans, bribes, or coercive exchanges by their voluntary nature and lack of a contractual obligation.

Gift exchange is an ancient practice found in many cultures. Some traditional systems, such as the potlatch of the Pacific Northwest, used reciprocal exchanges to establish status and alliances. In contemporary societies, presents are central to holidays, rites of passage, and life events, as well as to marketing and consumer culture.

Etymology: the term present comes from the Old French present, related to the verb to present, and entered English with the sense of "that which is presented." In modern usage, "present" and "gift" are often interchangeable, though some contexts prefer "gift" to emphasize the act or intention of giving.

Types and presentation: tangible gifts such as clothing or electronics; experiential gifts such as travel or concerts; and charitable gifts made in another's name. Wrapping, ribbons, or packaging are traditional ways of presenting a gift, though increasingly sustainable or minimal packaging is encouraged.

Etiquette and social norms vary by culture and occasion. Common occasions include birthdays, Christmas, weddings, graduations, and anniversaries. Guidance focuses on appropriateness of value, personal taste, and timing; in some contexts a gift receipt or registry can help ensure the present is well received.
