Fixtures

Fixtures refer to objects that are fixed to a building or installed as part of a system to perform a function. The term is used in several domains, where the core idea is permanence or integration into a larger setup.

In manufacturing and engineering, a fixture is a device used to locate, hold, and support a workpiece during processes such as milling, drilling, or assembly. The purpose is to ensure repeatable, accurate results. A fixture differs from a jig in that it primarily fixes the workpiece rather than guiding the tool. Examples include vises, clamps, locators, and fixtures built into machine tables. They are often custom-designed for a family of parts.

In construction and building services, fixtures are installed components that form part of the systems in a building. Plumbing fixtures such as sinks and toilets, lighting fixtures, and other permanent installations are typically not easily removed and may be treated as real property. They are distinguished from fittings, which are more portable or decorative items.

In sports, a fixture is a scheduled match or game within a league or tournament. Fixture lists show dates, venues, and opponents and are used to plan travel, broadcasts, and ticketing. The term can also describe the act of scheduling a game.

Legal and property contexts treat fixtures as items that become part of the real property by attachment or agreement. Whether an item is a fixture or a fitting can affect ownership, value, and rights in sale, lease, or inheritance.
