Skeuomorphism is a design concept in which features of a new object imitate the appearance or function of older technologies or materials. Skeuomorphic elements may be decorative, functional, or both, persisting in a new medium even when the original mechanism is no longer necessary. In digital design, skeuomorphism refers to interface cues that resemble real-world objects to facilitate learning and interaction, such as buttons that look like metal hardware or a calendar interface that resembles a desk calendar.

The term derives from Greek roots skeuos, meaning container or tool, and morphe, meaning shape or form. It originated in archaeology and anthropology to describe ornamental features retained from earlier technologies, and it entered broader design discourse in the late 20th century to describe transfers of form from physical to digital media.

Common physical examples include electronic devices with metal or wood veneer finishes, knobs and switches that echo older machinery, and upholstery details that evoke traditional craftsmanship. In software and consumer electronics, skeuomorphism has appeared as leather textures, stitching, and other tactile cues; early digital calendars, notebooks, and file cabinets often adopted such cues to imitate familiar objects.

In digital interfaces, skeuomorphism rose to prominence in the 2000s and early 2010s, with many products featuring realistic textures and layered, three-dimensional controls. It has been criticized for prioritizing aesthetic familiarity over clarity and efficiency. Starting in the mid-2010s, many designers shifted toward flatter or material design approaches that emphasize clean shapes, minimalism, and functional cues rather than realistic imitations. Skeuomorphism remains a relevant topic in discussions of how material history and cultural expectations influence design choices.
