Familiarity is the sense that something is known or recognized from previous exposure, which can apply to people, places, objects, or information. It can describe a cognitive state—knowing that something has been encountered before—and, in social contexts, a sense of closeness or ease with another person or group.

In memory research, familiarity is a component of recognition. People can judge that a stimulus is familiar without recalling specific details about when or where they encountered it. This distinction, often described in dual-process theories as familiarity versus recollection, helps explain why someone might recognize a face without remembering the occasion. Neurologically, familiarity and recollection are associated with different neural pathways, though the exact mechanisms remain a topic of study.

Familiarity arises through repetition and contextual cues. Repeated exposure can increase liking through the mere exposure effect, and processing fluency—the ease with which information is processed—can contribute to judgments of familiarity. These factors can influence decisions, preferences, and trust, sometimes via the fluency heuristic, where more fluent (familiar) information is treated as more valid or reliable.

Familiarity also has social and cultural dimensions. It can foster trust, cohesion, and ease in interpersonal interactions, but excessive familiarity may reduce attention or lead to complacency. In everyday life and communication, people often rely on familiar cues to navigate uncertainty and make rapid judgments.

Measurement of familiarity typically uses recognition tasks, yes/no judgments about prior exposure, and remember/know paradigms in cognitive experiments, alongside self-report scales that assess subjective sense of familiarity.
