Drive controller is a device or subsystem that manages the operation of a drive, performing tasks from motion control to data handling. The term is used across different domains, and a drive controller may refer to equipment that directs mechanical motion in automation and robotics, or to a controller embedded in or attached to a data storage device.

Motor drive controllers, common in robotics and industrial automation, convert high-level commands into motor power signals. They regulate speed, torque, and position, using feedback from sensors such as encoders or resolver sensors. Typical control methods include PID and field-oriented control, applied to motors such as brushless DC (BLDC) or stepper motors. Drive controllers interface with control systems via industrial networks or standard communication buses such as CAN, EtherCAT, Modbus, or PWM signals, and integrate power electronics, protection features, and safety interlocks to handle start/stop, braking, and fault responses.

Disk drive controllers, found in hard disk drives and solid-state drives, manage data transfer between a host computer and the storage media. They execute command processing, data encoding/decoding, error detection and correction, and caching. For HDDs, the controller handles servo control to position read/write heads and manage spindle speed; for SSDs, it coordinates flash management, wear leveling, and interface protocols. Common interfaces include SATA, SAS, NVMe (for PCIe-based SSDs), and other storage protocols, with firmware responsible for reliability, performance optimization, and error handling.

In both contexts, drive controllers rely on embedded processors or microcontrollers, firmware or software, and a combination of hardware interfaces, sensors, and power electronics to translate commands into precise, reliable drive operation.
