PCIe-based (often written as PCIebased in informal contexts) refers to devices and systems that use the PCI Express interface to communicate with a host, such as a CPU or chipset. PCIe-based designs emphasize high bandwidth and low latency connections.

PCI Express provides a high-speed, serial, point-to-point connection that scales with lane width and generation. Its architecture comprises a Root Complex, Switches, and Endpoints, with links negotiating generation and the number of lanes to determine available bandwidth.

Typical PCIe-based devices include NVMe solid-state drives, graphics processing units, network adapters, and hardware accelerators such as FPGAs or DPUs. External PCIe equipment can be connected via expansion chassis or interfaces like Thunderbolt, which can transport PCIe traffic.

Current generations from PCIe Gen 1 through Gen 5 provide progressively higher per-lane bandwidth; Gen 5 reaches up to 32 GT/s per lane, while newer specifications explore even higher rates through advanced signaling. Performance also scales with wider links and PCIe switches.

In practice, PCIe-based components are common in desktops, servers, and embedded systems due to compatibility with existing motherboards and software. Compatibility and power management are important considerations, and PCIe devices generally retain backward compatibility at lower generations and lane configurations.
