A configuration is the arrangement of the components of a system, including its parameters, settings, and resources, that determines how it behaves and appears. Configurations apply to software applications, hardware devices, networks, and processes, and they can be adjusted to change performance, compatibility, or functionality. A configuration can be stored, reproduced, and transferred across environments.

Common categories include system configurations (operating system options, services), application configurations (preferences, feature flags, plugin settings), hardware configurations (components, firmware options), and network configurations (IP addressing, routing, DNS). Configurations can be static, defined once, or dynamic, adapting to conditions at runtime. They may be persistent, saved to storage, or ephemeral, generated on-the-fly.

Configuration management is the practice of controlling and auditing configurations across an organization. It involves versioning, baselining, and change control, as well as tools that store configuration items and automate their application. Files that describe configurations are often in human-readable formats such as JSON, YAML, INI, or TOML, sometimes with schemas to validate structure. Declarative approaches specify the desired end state, while procedural approaches describe steps to reach it.

In software engineering and IT operations, configurations are central to deployment, scaling, and reproducibility. Infrastructure as code and containerization express configurations as code, enabling automation and versioning. Configuration drift—when live systems diverge from intended configurations—poses a risk and is mitigated by monitoring, automated remediation, and rollback procedures. Secrets and access controls are important considerations in managing configurations.
