Duties typically include interpreting design concepts from architects or engineers and translating them into complete plan sets. This includes architectural floor plans, elevations, and details; civil site and infrastructure drawings; structural layouts; or mechanical and electrical assemblies. They annotate drawings with notes, scales, tolerances, and specifications, and maintain revision histories. They must ensure drawings are accurate, complete, and compliant with applicable codes and standards.

Tools and methods have evolved from hand drafting to computer-aided design (CAD). Modern draftsmen use software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SolidWorks, or MicroStation to create, modify, and share drawings. They ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and company procedures, and may collaborate closely with engineers, architects, and construction specialists.

Education and training typically include a technical diploma or an associate degree in drafting or design, often complemented by on-the-job apprenticeships. Basic math, geometry, familiarity with building codes, and knowledge of manufacturing processes are essential. Proficiency in CAD and strong spatial and problem-solving skills are highly valued.

Specializations include architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and aerospace drafting. Some draftsmen focus on 2D documentation, while others produce 3D models and assemblies. In practice, titles vary; many roles are now labeled drafters, CAD technicians, or design technicians.

Work environments include architectural firms, engineering consultancies, construction contractors, manufacturing plants, and government agencies. Career paths may lead to senior drafters, lead drafters, design coordinators, or project engineers.
