An apprenticeship is a structured training arrangement in which a learner combines paid work with formal instruction to gain skills and a recognized credential in a specific occupation. Apprenticeships typically involve a contract with an employer, a training plan, and periodic assessments that lead to a journeyman’s certificate, diploma, or industry credential. They are designed to prepare participants for skilled trades or technical roles and can last from one to several years, depending on the occupation and jurisdiction. During the program, the apprentice usually spends a portion of time in a classroom or online learning environment and the remainder on the job under the supervision of experienced workers.

Apprenticeship programs can be traditional, company-sponsored, or government-regulated. They may include pre-apprenticeships to prepare entrants with foundational skills, as well as registered apprenticeships that meet national standards. In many countries, funding and incentives are available to employers who hire and train apprentices.

Common sectors include construction, manufacturing, electrical, plumbing, and other trades, but increasingly encompass information technology, healthcare, finance, and other professional fields. Apprentices learn practical competencies while developing soft skills such as communication and teamwork. They provide a pathway to credentialing that does not require a college degree and can improve employment prospects and earnings, though program quality and access vary by region.

Regional differences include the German dual system, which combines company-based training with vocational schools; the United States’ registered apprenticeship programs regulated at federal and state levels; and the UK model with employer sponsorship and a statutory framework. Challenges include limited availability, geographic disparities, and the need for high-quality supervision and alignment with labor market needs.

In recent years, apprenticeship concepts have expanded to non-traditional fields and adult learners, with digital, hybrid, and competency-based formats and the growth of pre-apprenticeships and micro-credentials aimed at widening access to skilled work.
