Brystomkreds is a Danish term that refers to the measurement of the circumference around the bust. It is used primarily for determining clothing size, tailoring, and for some aspects of medical assessment. The measurement is taken at the fullest part of the breasts, just beneath the nipple line, and is expressed in centimetres.

The measurement process begins by positioning the subject in a relaxed standing posture. A flexible tape measure is placed horizontally around the chest, aligning it with the clavicle and the part of the mammary tissue that bulges most. The tape should be snug but not compressed, and the subject should breathe naturally. The reading at the point where the tape meets itself is recorded. For greater accuracy, the measurement is often performed twice and averaged.

In the apparel industry, the breast circumference contributes to the classification of bust size, which is combined with underarm circumference to derive a garment size. Tailors also use it to create custom-fitting coats, dresses, and lingerie. In sports apparel, breast circumference can influence fit for compression garments and brassieres designed for athletic performance.

Healthcare professionals may measure breast circumference as part of a routine physical exam to monitor changes that could indicate breast development or pathology. However, it is not a diagnostic tool for breast cancer; imaging modalities remain primary diagnostic methods.

Variations in typical breast circumference values exist among different ethnic, age and body composition groups. Average values in European populations range from 90 to 110 centimetres for adult women, whereas other populations may have higher or lower averages. Accurate measurement is essential for sizing correctness, fair comparison across markets, and for monitoring growth or changes over time.
