Throttle-by-wire (TBW) is a drive-by-wire system that replaces the traditional mechanical linkage between the accelerator pedal and the engine throttle with electronic sensors, actuators, and control software. In TBW, pressing the accelerator sends an electronic signal rather than moving a cable, and an electronic control unit interprets this input to regulate the engine’s air intake.

The main components of a TBW system include an accelerator pedal position sensor (APPS), a throttle body with a motorized actuator, a throttle position or position-sensor, and the engine control unit (ECU or PCM). The vehicle’s data network (often CAN) connects these parts. Modern TBW installations may use redundant elements, such as dual pedal sensors or dual actuators, to maintain operation in the event of a fault and to meet functional-safety requirements.

Operation involves the driver’s input being translated into a target throttle opening by the ECU based on engine maps and operating conditions. The throttle actuator then positions the butterfly valve accordingly. The system continuously monitors sensor and actuator health and can enter a safe or degraded mode if faults are detected. TBW systems also interact with brake, cruise control, and stability systems, and many implementations include safety features such as brake-override logic to limit engine power when brakes are applied.

Advantages of TBW include flexible engine management, improved packaging and weight reduction, and easier integration with drive modes and emissions controls. Challenges include ensuring high reliability and cybersecurity, managing failure modes through diagnostics and redundancy, and meeting global safety standards such as ISO 26262. TBW is widely used in modern automobiles and is also related to electronic throttle concepts in other transportation domains.
