Power users are users who interact with software or systems at a level well beyond typical end users. They often have high proficiency, broad technical literacy, and a willingness to customize, automate, and extend tools. They may work across settings such as office productivity suites, databases, development environments, data analysis platforms, and enterprise software. A power user is not necessarily a formal title; rather, it describes behavior and capability within an organization or community.

Typical activities include configuring advanced options, creating macros or scripts, building automations, integrating disparate tools via APIs or connectors, and developing templates, dashboards, or plug-ins. They frequently use command-line interfaces, scripting languages, and third-party add-ons to increase efficiency and tailor software to workflows. In many contexts, power users serve as subject-matter experts who can translate user needs into practical changes and workarounds.

Impact and roles: In organizations, power users act as informal champions, mentors, and early adopters. They participate in user feedback programs, beta tests, and governance discussions; they may lead internal training or create knowledge bases. Their input can influence product roadmaps and support processes. By sharing best practices, they help improve adoption and reduce support costs, but they can also create fragmentation if governance and documentation are lacking.

Challenges: Power users can generate shadow IT, use unsupported configurations, or introduce security and compliance risks if safeguards are not in place. Effective management includes policies for access, change control, documentation, and periodic reviews; training and community guidelines help maintain consistency.
