Fragmentation is the process of breaking or being broken into smaller parts or segments. In everyday use, it denotes the division of something into pieces that may or may not be separate units, and in technical contexts it describes specific forms of disintegration within systems, spaces, or populations.

In ecology and conservation, habitat fragmentation refers to the breaking up of continuous habitats into smaller, isolated patches, typically due to human activities such as agriculture, road building, and urban development. Fragmentation can reduce habitat connectivity, alter ecosystem processes, increase edge effects, hinder movement and gene flow, and elevate extinction risk for small or habitat-specialized species. Conservation approaches include preserving large, connected landscapes, creating wildlife corridors, and restoring degraded habitat to improve patch quality and permeability.

In computing, fragmentation describes the inefficient organization of data or memory, resulting from how resources are allocated over time. External fragmentation occurs when free space is available in many small pieces, while internal fragmentation results from allocating larger blocks than needed. Both can degrade performance and storage efficiency. Mitigation strategies include defragmentation tools, filesystem design that minimizes fragmentation, memory allocation schemes such as paging or compaction, and solid-state storage considerations.

In sociology and media studies, fragmentation denotes the development of diverse, often isolated, audiences, identities, or cultural practices that resist a single shared public sphere. In economics and marketing, market fragmentation describes segmentation into smaller, heterogeneous groups or niches. While fragmentation can enhance targeting and choice, it can also complicate social cohesion and policymaking, contributing to polarization or unequal access to information and services.

In biology, fragmentation is a form of asexual reproduction in which an organism splits into fragments that develop into independent individuals, as observed in certain plants, fungi, and simple animals.
