Asexuality is a sexual orientation defined by a lack of sexual attraction to other people, or by a very low or absent interest in sexual activity. It is distinct from celibacy, which is a voluntary choice to refrain from sex, and from sexual dysfunction. Asexual people may still experience other forms of attraction, such as romantic, emotional, or aesthetic attraction.

The asexual spectrum includes a variety of experiences. Gray-asexuality describes people who rarely experience sexual attraction, and demisexuality describes those who experience sexual attraction only after forming a strong emotional bond. Some people identify as fully asexual, while others fall along the spectrum at different times or in different contexts.

Romantic attraction is not universal among aces. Some asexual people are aromantic (not experiencing romantic attraction) while others are romantically attracted to others (heteroromantic, homoromantic, biromantic, panromantic, etc.). Individuals may or may not desire intimate relationships, and the presence or absence of sex in a relationship is a personal choice.

Community and research: The term asexual is widely used by individuals and communities. The Asexual Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) provides information and support. Prevalence estimates vary and are difficult to measure; research is ongoing. Asexuality is recognized as a valid sexual orientation within many LGBTQ+ communities.
