Training and skills commonly required include degrees in demography, statistics, public health, sociology, economics, or data science. Proficiency in survey methodology, statistical software (R, Python, SAS), GIS, and data privacy and ethics is typical, as is experience with data visualization and technical reporting. Strong communication skills are often needed to translate technical findings for non-specialist audiences.

Work settings and impact vary widely, from national statistics offices and health ministries to international bodies such as UN agencies, the World Bank, or academic and NGO research centers.
