Demographers are social scientists who study the size, structure, and distribution of populations. They seek to understand how births, deaths, aging, and migration interact to shape population change at local, national, and global scales. Their work informs public policy in health, education, housing, labor markets, urban planning, and social security, among other areas.

Demography relies on diverse data sources, including censuses, vital statistics, surveys, and administrative records. Demographers apply statistical methods, life-table analysis, cohort approaches, and predictive models to describe current populations and project future trends. They examine indicators such as fertility rates, life expectancy, age structure, sex ratios, migration streams, and geographic variation in population dynamics.

Subfields include fertility and reproduction, mortality and aging, migration and urbanization, population health, and population projections. Demographers may specialize in macro-level analysis of national trends or micro-level studies of families and smaller communities. Their findings are used by government agencies, international organizations (such as the United Nations, World Bank, and WHO), research institutions, universities, and non-governmental organizations.

Ethical and practical considerations include data privacy, representation and bias in samples, and the limitations of projections. While the field has long integrated statistical methods with social theory, it continues to adapt to new data sources, such as administrative records and big data, to improve understanding of population change and its consequences.
