Communicating is the process of sharing information, ideas, or feelings between individuals or groups through a common system of symbols, signs, or behaviors. It involves encoding a message, transmitting it via a channel, and decoding the message by the recipient, with feedback shaping understanding and response. Effective communication aims to convey intended meaning and influence understanding, action, or relationships.

Core elements include the sender, the message, the channel, the receiver, feedback, context, and noise. Classic models describe communication as a linear transfer from source to receiver, while more contemporary views treat it as a dynamic, ongoing process in which all participants influence each other (the transactional model).

Overcoming barriers involves active listening, clarifying and tailoring messages to the audience, using precise language, providing feedback, and verifying understanding. Ethical communication emphasizes honesty, privacy, consent, and inclusivity.

In daily life and professional contexts, communication underpins collaboration, learning, and decision making. Its effectiveness is commonly judged by clarity, accuracy, engagement, and the ability to influence outcomes or relationships.
