Kommunikationsmoduler are modular components that provide networking and communication capabilities to devices and systems. They can be embedded as hardware modules or software libraries that enable connectivity across various protocols. They are used in embedded systems, industrial automation, IoT, automotive, and consumer electronics.

They come in wired and wireless variants. Common hardware interfaces include UART, SPI, I2C, PCIe, USB, and CAN/LIN for automotive. Wireless options include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, NB-IoT, LTE-M, 5G, and LoRa. Many modules include a protocol stack, such as TCP/IP, MQTT, CoAP, or custom protocols, and may support encryption and authentication.

Architecture typically features a host processor, a communication module, and drivers or middleware that provide a uniform API to applications. Modules may handle data framing, addressing, error detection, session management, and, in gateways, protocol translation. They can function as standalone devices or as software components in a larger platform.

Standards and compliance: modules adhere to radio, EMC, and safety standards as applicable; certifications like CE, FCC, IC may be required. Interoperability is achieved via standard interfaces and, where possible, open profiles. Applications span automotive ECUs, industrial control, building automation, health devices, and smart devices.

Design considerations: power budget, footprint, thermal management, reliability, firmware update mechanisms (OTA), security features (encryption, secure boot), and lifecycle management. The trend is toward software-defined and modular stacks, with emphasis on interoperability, security, and support for cloud integration.
