Förprepress

Förprepress, often described as the preparation work before printing, refers to the set of processes in print production that prepare digital content for the printing process. It covers the translation of creative files into print-ready materials, including file handling, color management, layout and typography preparation, trapping, bleed management, and imposition, as well as the generation of output files for printers or printing plates.

Typical steps in förprepress include intake and verification of files (checking fonts, linked images, color spaces, and resolution), color management using ICC profiles to ensure consistent color across devices, and proofing (soft and/or hard proofs) to validate appearance before production. Trapping, which adjusts for misregistration, and bleed and margins preparation are performed to prevent edge gaps during printing. Imposition planning organizes pages for efficient printing and binding, while font embedding or substitution ensures text renders correctly. Image processing, screening, and halftone setup are prepared to match the chosen printing technology and screening method.

Output generation involves creating print-ready files such as PDF/X or PostScript, and, when applicable, preparing data for plate making (CTP) or digital presses. The workflow often uses RIP software and device-specific settings to ensure compatibility with the chosen press. Förprepress aims to guarantee print fidelity, minimize errors, and reduce waste by standardizing workflows, ensuring file integrity, and aligning with industry standards and press capabilities.
