CEWs

CEW stands for Conducted Electrical Weapon. A CEW is a device that delivers a high-voltage, low-current electrical discharge between two exposed darts or through direct skin contact. CEWs are designed to temporarily incapacitate a person to allow safe intervention, reducing the need for more force. They are used by law enforcement, corrections, and private security in many countries. The term CEW is commonly used alongside electronic control device (ECD).

Most CEWs fire two dart-like probes connected by long insulated wires, which contact the body to deliver pulses that disrupt voluntary muscle control. In direct-contact models, the pads are placed on the skin. The delivered energy is a high-voltage, short-duration impulse intended to cause neuromuscular incapacitation rather than tissue damage. Activations typically last for a few seconds, but some devices allow longer or repeated cycles. The devices run on replaceable battery packs and are designed for one-handed operation in the field.

Effectiveness and safety: Studies indicate CEWs can reduce injuries to officers and suspects compared with other force options, though outcomes vary and not all subjects are incapacitated. Risks include falls and secondary injuries, burns from arcing, and rare but serious complications such as cardiac events, especially in people with preexisting heart conditions, cardiac devices, or drug intoxication. CEWs should be used according to training, policy, and medical guidelines, with consideration for vulnerable populations.

Regulation and policy: Use is governed by national and local laws, professional standards, and agency policies. Training emphasizes aiming, distance, de-escalation, and medical assessment after exposure. Data from activations is commonly logged for accountability and review. History: The modern CEW emerged in the late 20th century, with the brand-identified Tasers popularizing the technology.
