Intervention refers to an action taken by an individual or organization to influence the course of events in a situation. Interventions are typically undertaken when the existing trajectory is judged inadequate or when outside involvement is believed to be necessary to prevent harm, promote welfare, or resolve a problem. The term is used across disciplines, including international relations, medicine, psychology, and social policy.

In international contexts, intervention encompasses diplomacy, mediation, economic measures, sanctions, peacekeeping, and, in some cases, military action. International law generally emphasizes state sovereignty and non-interference, but doctrines such as the responsibility to protect (R2P) propose limited intervention to prevent mass atrocity when states fail to protect their populations. Debates focus on legality, legitimacy, proportionality, and effectiveness.

In humanitarian and medical terms, interventions aim to prevent or treat illness, injuries, or deprivation. This includes medical procedures, vaccination campaigns, public health programs, disaster relief, and humanitarian aid. In clinical settings, interventions include therapies, medications, and behavioral interventions designed to modify health outcomes or behavior. In family and social work contexts, interventions involve counseling, education, or coordinated services to address individual or community needs.

Ethical and practical considerations accompany any intervention. Key questions concern consent, risk versus benefit, unintended consequences, and the capacity for local actors to sustain improvements. Evaluation and accountability mechanisms are used to assess impact and adjust approaches.
