Interventions

Interventions are actions or sets of actions intended to influence a target outcome by altering conditions, behavior, or environments. The term is used across disciplines to describe deliberate efforts to bring about change, often through planned programs, policies, or treatments. An intervention differs from an observation or passive change in that it involves an actively introduced variable.

In healthcare and public health, interventions include medicines, medical procedures, clinical care pathways, vaccines, and behavioral interventions such as counseling. Public health interventions may target risk factors or determinants, for example immunization campaigns, screening programs, taxation on tobacco, and regulations that limit unhealthy products or promote safer behaviors. Implementation often requires coordination among providers, communities, and policymakers.

In education and social policy, interventions include tutoring programs, school-based reforms, social support services, housing programs, and employment training. The goal is to improve learning, health, social inclusion, or economic outcomes. Effectiveness depends on fidelity of implementation and context.

In research, an intervention is the active condition applied to participants. Randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental designs compare outcomes with control conditions. Process evaluation tracks how the intervention is delivered, and outcome evaluation measures impact. Implementation science studies how to scale and sustain interventions in real-world settings.

Evaluation considerations include effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, equity, and potential unintended consequences. Ethical considerations cover consent, safety, transparency, and respect for communities affected by the intervention.
