Deescalation is a set of strategies designed to prevent the escalation of conflict and reduce the risk of harm in tense or potentially violent encounters. It emphasizes communication, restraint, and environmental management to influence a situation toward safety and nonviolence rather than coercion or force.

Applications occur in law enforcement, mental health care, education, workplaces, healthcare settings, and community settings. Trained professionals use deescalation to respond to aggression, distress, or crisis, aiming to preserve life and dignity while addressing underlying needs such as fear, pain, or frustration.

Core principles include remaining calm, speaking in a respectful and nonthreatening tone, and using active listening to acknowledge the other person’s feelings. Nonthreatening body language, giving space, and avoiding rapid movements or confrontational postures help reduce perceived threat. Offering choices and setting clear, noncoercive boundaries is also central.

Verbal deescalation techniques involve asking open questions, reflecting back what the person has said, validating emotions, and expressing concern. Clear explanations, simple language, and time to think may be used, with options to pause the interaction or involve a trusted third party when needed.

While deescalation can prevent violence, it is not universally effective and depends on context, risk level, and the parties involved. It requires training, practice, and ongoing evaluation, and can be challenging under high stress or when physical danger is imminent. Debriefing after incidents supports learning.
