Visszérgyulladás, or phlebitis, is an inflammation of a vein. It most commonly affects the veins in the legs, though it can occur in other parts of the body. There are two main types: superficial thrombophlebitis and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Superficial thrombophlebitis involves inflammation and a blood clot in a vein just below the skin's surface. It typically presents as a red, tender, warm, and sometimes swollen cord-like area. DVT, a more serious condition, involves a blood clot forming in a deep vein, usually in the leg. Symptoms can include swelling, pain, warmth, and redness in the affected limb, though sometimes there are no noticeable symptoms.

Risk factors for developing visszérgyulladás include immobility, such as prolonged sitting or bed rest, recent surgery, pregnancy, obesity, certain medical conditions like cancer, and a history of blood clots. Trauma to a vein can also trigger inflammation.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination and can be confirmed with imaging tests such as an ultrasound. Treatment for superficial thrombophlebitis often involves conservative measures like elevating the leg, applying warm compresses, and sometimes anti-inflammatory medications. For DVT, treatment typically includes anticoagulant medications (blood thinners) to prevent the clot from growing and to reduce the risk of it traveling to the lungs (pulmonary embolism), which is a life-threatening complication. In some cases, other treatments may be considered. Early recognition and treatment are important, especially for DVT, to prevent serious complications.
