Toksikoloke, commonly translated as toxicologist, is a scientist who studies the adverse effects of chemicals, biological agents, and physical stressors on humans, wildlife, and ecosystems. The discipline combines toxicology, exposure science, and risk assessment to understand how substances cause harm and under what conditions that harm can be prevented.

Toksikoloke work spans several subfields, including environmental toxicology (effects of pollutants in air, water, and soil); clinical toxicology (diagnosis and management of poisoning); forensic toxicology (toxic substances in legal contexts); regulatory toxicology (safety evaluation of chemicals and products); occupational toxicology (workplace exposures); and ecotoxicology (effects on non-human species). Each area emphasizes different stakeholders, such as patients, communities, industries, or regulators.

Education typically includes a degree in toxicology or a related field such as chemistry, biology, or pharmacology, followed by graduate training. Many toksikolokes pursue master’s or doctoral degrees, and in some countries professional certification or licensure is available or required. Continuing education is common to keep pace with advances in science and regulation.

Practitioners use in vivo, in vitro, and computational methods to assess hazard, dose–response, and exposure. They conduct risk assessments, interpret data, prepare safety evaluations, contribute to regulatory decisions, and communicate findings to scientists, policymakers, and the public. They may also design studies, monitor environmental or clinical outcomes, and advise on product development or public health interventions.

Employers include universities, pharmaceutical and chemical companies, contract research organizations, and government agencies. The field emphasizes ethical considerations, animal welfare, and the use of alternatives to animal testing where feasible, as well as transparent risk communication and stakeholder engagement. Toxicology has historical roots in the work of Paracelsus and has developed through modern science to support public health and safety.
