Rasestumise refers to the process by which a person becomes pregnant. In Estonian, rasestumine denotes conception, while rasedus denotes the state of being pregnant. The term is used in medical, legal, and social contexts to describe how pregnancy begins and develops.

Conception typically occurs when a sperm fertilizes an oocyte, usually in the fallopian tube, forming a zygote. The zygote travels to the uterus, implants into the endometrium, and begins to develop into an embryo and then a fetus. Hormonal changes sustain the early stages of pregnancy and prepare the body for ongoing development and childbirth.

Pregnancy generally lasts about 40 weeks from the first day of the last menstrual period, though actual durations range from roughly 37 to 42 weeks. It is commonly divided into three trimesters: the first trimester (0–12 weeks) involves early development; the second trimester (13–26 weeks) often brings visible fetal growth and increased maternal comfort; the third trimester (27–40 weeks) focuses on maturation and impending birth. Each stage presents distinct fetal milestones and maternal experiences.

Prenatal care plays a key role in monitoring health and development. Regular medical visits, ultrasounds, and laboratory tests track fetal growth, screen for conditions, and manage maternal health.
