Hormonal refers to hormones, chemical messengers produced by glands of the endocrine system and other tissues. Hormones travel through the bloodstream to target cells, where they influence metabolism, growth, development, reproduction, and mood. The term also describes processes governed by such signals.

Hormones are broadly categorized as peptides/proteins, steroids, and amines. Peptide/protein hormones such as insulin and growth hormone bind to receptors on the cell surface and initiate signaling cascades. Steroid hormones such as cortisol, estrogen, and testosterone are lipid-soluble and typically regulate gene expression by entering cells and binding intracellular receptors. Amine hormones include catecholamines and thyroid hormones, derived from amino acids, with diverse roles in metabolism and alertness.

Regulation occurs through feedback mechanisms, especially the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. Negative feedback maintains hormonal balance by reducing production when levels rise; some systems use positive feedback, such as during parturition. Hormone action is often context-dependent, influenced by receptor availability, binding affinity, and interactions with other signaling pathways.

Functions span puberty and reproduction, metabolism and energy balance, stress responses, growth, and circadian rhythms. Hormonal signals coordinate developmental milestones and long-term physiological adaptation to change.

Clinical relevance arises from disorders of hormonal systems, including hypo- or hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, adrenal insufficiency, and various reproductive disorders. Management may involve hormone replacement therapy, oral contraceptives, insulin therapy, or drugs that modulate hormone production, release, or receptor activity. Diagnostic evaluation commonly includes hormonal level testing and assessment of endocrine gland function.

Environmental factors can influence hormonal signaling; endocrine disruptors are substances that interfere with hormone synthesis, transport, or action, potentially affecting development, metabolism, and health. Understanding hormonal regulation supports insights into physiology, medicine, and public health.
