Rajoituslaite, or limiting device, is a generic term for a device that imposes an upper or lower bound on a parameter within a system to prevent unsafe operation, damage, or non-compliance with requirements. It can be embedded in machinery, electrical circuits, or software controls and may operate passively or actively.

Mechanical limiting devices restrict movement, travel, or force. Examples include end stops, travel limits, thrust or torque limiters, and mechanical stops that physically stop a part at a predefined position. These devices help prevent collisions, over-travel, or component fatigue in machines and robotic systems.

Electrical and electronic limiting devices regulate electrical or physical quantities. Current- or voltage-limiting circuits, fuses, circuit breakers, and thermal cutoffs limit power and protect equipment and personnel. In control systems, software-based limits constrain setpoints, speeds, or trajectories to ensure safe and predictable operation.

Active limiting often uses sensors, controllers, and actuators to monitor parameters and enforce limits dynamically. Passive limits rely on fixed hardware or inherent properties of components.
