Predictable is an adjective describing something whose outcome or behavior can be foreseen, anticipated, or estimated with some confidence based on available information, patterns, or established laws. A predictable event is one whose result follows from known causes or prior data, whereas an unpredictable event resists such forecasting.

Etymology: The word derives from predict plus -able, from late Latin prae- “before” and dicere “to say,” meaning literally “able to be said beforehand.”

Usage in science and mathematics: In physical sciences and engineering, systems governed by deterministic laws are often considered predictable, at least in principle, because exact or approximate forecasts can be made from initial conditions. In practice, measurement error, model limitations, and chaotic dynamics can limit predictability. In probability theory, “predictable” may refer to concepts such as processes or information that can be anticipated given the past, or more technically the predictable sigma-algebra used in stochastic calculus.

Connotations: In everyday language, describing something as predictable can be neutral but may carry a pejorative sense of dullness or lack of novelty. The term is also used in contrast with unpredictable, surprising, or random phenomena.
