Dullness is the quality or condition of lacking sharpness, brightness, or polish. In everyday language it can describe sensory impressions, physical objects, or mental states that feel less vivid or precise than expected.

In tools and objects, dullness refers to the wear of an edge or surface. A dull blade has lost its ability to cut efficiently because the edge has become rounded or deformed. Restoring sharpness typically involves sharpening, grinding, or honing. A dull finish on a material or surface describes a matte rather than a glossy appearance, resulting from the absence of strong reflections.

In perception, dullness can describe visual, color, or lighting effects. Dull colors are those with low saturation or low luminance, producing a muted appearance. Matte or non-reflective surfaces contribute to visual dullness, while high contrast lighting can enhance perceived sharpness and color vividness.

In sound, a dull tone is one that lacks brightness or resonance, often described as muffled or flat. The quality of sound is influenced by the source, environment, and recording or transmission conditions.

In cognition and mood, dullness of mind or mood refers to reduced mental quickness, alertness, or interest. It may result from fatigue, poor sleep, stress, illness, or monotony. While often temporary, persistent dullness can be a symptom warranting medical evaluation to exclude underlying conditions.

In medicine, dullness is also a technical term used in physical examination, where percussion produces a dull sound over denser tissue or fluid, as in evaluating organs or pleural effusions.
