Unpredictable describes events or outcomes that cannot be reliably anticipated given available information. It is formed by the prefix un- attached to predictable, which derives from Latin prae‑dicere, "to say beforehand." In common usage, something is unpredictable if its future state cannot be determined with confidence in advance, though additional data or improved models may reduce uncertainty.

In science, unpredictability arises from different sources. Chaotic systems are deterministic but exhibit extreme sensitivity to initial conditions, leading to practical foreseeing horizons that are short despite simple rules. Stochastic processes involve inherent randomness, meaning even perfect models cannot predict exact outcomes, only distributions of possibilities.

In daily life and applied fields, unpredictability affects weather, financial markets, biological systems, and human behavior. People often express unpredictability with probabilistic forecasts that quantify uncertainty rather than promises of certainty.

Unpredictability is not the same as randomness or incompetence. Something may be unpredictable yet follow a deterministic law, or be partially predictable with some probability. It also differs from being irrational or arbitrary; unpredictability can reflect complexity or limited knowledge.
