Pystykorva, also known as Suomenpystykorva or Finnish Spitz, is a Nordic spitz-type dog breed that originated in Finland. It is one of the oldest Finnish breeds, developed as a hunting dog for game birds and small quarry. The breed is distinguished by its erect ears, pointed muzzle, and a high-set, curled tail carried over the back. The coat is dense and double, with a red-gold to orange or wheaten color being most typical.

Appearance is medium-sized with a fox-like expression. The ears stand erect, the tail curls over the back, and the coat provides good protection for northern climates. The breed’s overall look combines a lively, alert demeanor with a sturdy, compact frame.

Temperament and use: Pystykorva is lively, alert, and generally friendly with family, though it can be reserved with strangers. It is intelligent and independent, requiring patient, consistent training and early socialization. The breed is known for its vocal quality, often producing a distinctive yodel or song to communicate, rather than constant barking. It typically makes a good watchdog and can be a devoted family companion when properly exercised and socialized.

Care and health: The double coat sheds seasonally and benefits from regular brushing. Exercise needs are moderate to high, including daily walks, play, and mental stimulation. The breed tends to be robust, though like many purebred dogs it can be prone to issues such as hip dysplasia or certain eye conditions in some lines. Life expectancy is commonly around 12 to 14 years.

Status: The pystykorva is recognized by major kennel clubs, including the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, and remains a popular breed in Finland and other parts of Northern Europe as a family and working dog.
