Maskinvara, or hardware, refers to the tangible components of a computer system or electronic device. It contrasts with software, which comprises the programs and data that run on hardware. Hardware includes electronic circuits, mechanical parts, and devices that can be touched.

Core internal components typically include the central processing unit (CPU), memory such as RAM, storage devices (hard disk drives or solid-state drives), the motherboard and chipset, a power supply, and cooling solutions. The performance and capabilities of a system derive from the architecture, fabrication process, and quality of these parts. Modern systems use interfaces such as PCIe, SATA, and NVMe, and may employ various memory technologies like DDR5.

Peripheral and external hardware encompasses input devices (keyboard, mouse, touch interfaces), output devices (monitor, printer), and expansion cards (graphics, sound, network cards). Networking and wireless hardware (Ethernet adapters, Wi‑Fi modules, Bluetooth controllers) are integral to many setups. External enclosures, cables, and connectors also form part of hardware, enabling data transfer and power delivery.

Design and manufacturing of hardware involve electrical and mechanical engineering, circuit design, PCB layout, firmware development, and system integration. Prototyping and testing precede production, which includes fabrication, assembly, and quality assurance. Hardware lifecycles vary; some components are upgradeable (RAM, storage, GPUs), while others are fixed within a device.

In use, hardware provides the platform for software to operate. The efficiency and capabilities of a system depend on hardware architecture, drivers, and software optimization, with specialized hardware such as GPUs or ASICs accelerating particular tasks.
