A listening room is a space designed to reproduce audio with high fidelity for critical listening and enjoyment. It is used in homes, professional studios, and exhibition or demonstration spaces. The goal is accurate sound reproduction with a coherent stereo image and minimal tonal coloration caused by the room itself.

Acoustic design of a listening room focuses on geometry, materials, and layout. Common principles include placing the listening position away from walls, achieving a balanced room symmetry, and using a combination of absorbers, diffusers, and bass traps. First-reflection points on the side walls and ceiling are typically treated to reduce early reflections, while bass traps in the corners help control low-frequency modes. Floor treatment, such as carpeting, and carefully chosen wall and ceiling treatments help manage reverberation time and echo. Diffusers may be used on rear or side walls to preserve spaciousness while reducing modal buildup.

Equipment and measurement play important roles. A listening room may house loudspeakers or high-quality headphones, with calibration and tuning guided by measurements of frequency response and impulse response. Tools such as Room EQ Wizard or similar software can assist in assessing room behavior. Adjustments commonly involve speaker placement and toe-in, listening position, and the amount and placement of acoustic treatment. Subwoofer integration often requires bass management to avoid exacerbating room modes.
